Chelsea reached the top of Europe for the first time in nine years.

Chelsea defeated Manchester City 1-0 to win the Champions League final in the 2020-2021 UEFA Champions League on the 30th at Istadio do Dragan in Porto, Portugal, thanks to Kai Havertz’s winning goal. This is the third time the English Premier League (EPL) teams have met in the Champions League final.

Chelsea won the European Cup for the second time in club history. Chelsea won the Champions League final in the 2011-2021 season by defeating Germany’s Bayern Munich on penalty shootouts.

Chelsea’s manager Thomas Tuchel lifted the big year on the same day and won the Champions League for the first time since his managerial debut. Tuchel led Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) of France to the Champions League final last season but lost to Bayern Munich 0-1 and stayed in the runners-up.

Chelsea have had a bad start this season. Chelsea started the season under Frank Lampard’s system and had a sluggish start in the league and fell to the mid-tier of the league. In the end, Lampard was sacked, and Tuchel was a firefighter who was dispatched in January to rescue Chelsea from crisis.

Coach Tuchel quickly reorganized Chelsea based on his unique flexible tactics. In particular, it was noticeable that Chelsea’s defense was strengthened centered on the three-back. Chelsea, equipped with a three-backer, conceded only 16 goals in 29 games since Tuchel took over as manager, and showed excellent defense, especially against strong teams.

Chelsea’s wall defense was also brilliant this day. Chelsea blocked Manchester City’s attack based on solid organizational skills despite objective power inferiority. Manchester City, who boasted the best attacking power in Europe, was also helpless. Thiago Silva, a key player in Chelsea’s defense, left with an injury in the 39th minute of the first half, but they kept themselves still.

It was the recently transferred Kai Havertz who decided the match. Havertz, who joined Chelsea this season from Leverkusen, Germany, caught the ball sharply passed by Mason Mount (22) from midfield in the 42nd minute of the first half and cleared the goalkeeper with a left footed shot. It was the winning goal created by young prospects who are considered the future of Chelsea. Chelsea maintained their 1-0 lead until the end.

On the other hand, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola suffered another defeat in the Champions League. Manchester City have won the league and league cup this season, and tried to treble (three trophies) but failed.
