Dawon’s Article
Hi guys, for today’s article, I am going to introduce you to the rest areas in Korean expressways. This Chuseok, my family had to go all the way over to Daegu by car. Normally, it would be a 3~4 hours ride, but since it was the holiday season last week, it took about 8~9 hours. It is such a tiresome journey but there are some service areas that make the ride not too boring. A lot of Koreans pick hanging out at these rest areas as a part of the fun of traveling by car.
In a typical service area in Korea, there are places to grab a meal, snack bars, gas stations, and places to shop. The most important part of the place is the food! There are some famous snacks that Koreans enjoy when traveling by car.
Let me show you some of the must-haves!
#1 Tornado Potato

This is a type of potato chip you can normally see at a traveling spot in Korea. It is basically fried chips in a tornado shape. You can get cheese or onion seasoning sprinkled on top. I especially like this snack since it is crispy and savory at the same time.
#2 Buttor roasted Potatoes
In addition to the tornado potatoes, this is a famous potato snack that many Koreans love. The potatoes are often served as a whole but it is not that big. Since it is roasted in butter, salt, and sugar, it tastes sweet and salty simultaneously. When the attractive flavor of the outer layer meets with the hot and soft inside, it becomes the number 1 snack amongst travelers.
I introduced some potato snacks in this post, but there are lots of other snacks too. I hope you guys try them and get to know the charm of road travel in Korea!
