‘Apple’ invests in R&D support center and developer academy in Pohang POSTECH

Global company Apple’s R&D support center and developer academy for small and medium-sized businesses in Korea will be established in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province. Apple, Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) signed a memorandum of understanding on the establishment and operation of the center and academy at Pohang City Hall on the 27th.

Korea is the first country in the world to establish an R&D support center, and it will be operated specializing in manufacturing. The support center builds up-to-date equipment related to smart processes to strengthen the smart manufacturing capabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises, and provides education and consulting while Apple’s experts are resident. Manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises across the country are targeted and given the opportunity to upgrade their technologies and products. The developer academy will be established for the first time in Korea and will nurture SW manpower. Currently, it is being operated in three countries, Italy, Brazil and Indonesia. In Korea, about 200 trainees are selected annually to provide educational programs for 9 months. Through the best practices of Korean developers who have achieved success in the global economic application economy, such as Kakao Bank, education will be conducted to nurture developers, entrepreneurs, and designers.

Apple explained that the signing of this agreement is one of the company’s major investments to create jobs and support SMEs, and the city of Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, explained that it will be an opportunity to establish the status of a startup special zone and to serve as an endogenous development engine for the region. The continued operation of the center and academy will serve as a catalyst for balanced regional development as well as Korea’s economic growth.
