It is always hard to get used to other countries’ culture. It takes some time and patience. Today, I will recommend you some recent, hot movies and dramas you should watch in order to have something to talk about with Koreans. From my experience, it feels really satisfying to see foreigners’ talking about K-POP or K-POP dramas, so it might help you make Korean friends if you know something about them.
- 도깨비 (Goblin, drama, 2016-2017)
It was really popular TV drama series not too long ago. In the “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God” or also known as “Goblin”, the male lead was, quite literally, a god. Based on the Korean folklore of dokkaebi, a higher spiritual being roughly translated as goblin, the drama series features actor Gong Yoo as Kim Shin, a warrior born centuries ago, who after being impaled with a sword, was transformed into an immortal dokkaebi with endless wealth and powers. In “Guardian,” the female lead Ji Eun-Tak played by Kim Go-eun is able to summon Dokkaebi Kim simply by blowing out a flame. The funny thing is that flame doesn’t have to be a real fire, it can be a flame is an app on her phone. This drama has both funny and moving factors that it was loved by various ages of people in Korea and other countries.
- 태양의 후예 (Descendants of the sun, drama, 2016)
Descendants of the Sun is a 2016 South Korean television series starring Song Joong-ki, Song Hye-kyo, Jin Goo, and Kim Ji-Won. (FYI, Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-Kyo are now married!!!) Lt. Yoo Si-jin (Song Joong-Ki) is the captain of South Korean Special Forces unit. He and his friend Sergeant Major Seo Dae-Young (Jin Goo) were off-duty when they met Dr. Kang Mo-yeon (Song Hye-Kyo) for the first time, and Yoo was instantly attracted to her. There were so many misunderstandings and episodes up until Yoo and Kang finally dated. In this drama, like Goblin, there are many funny and moving factors. However, before you watch either option 1 or 2, grab some tissues because they might make you cry at one point.
- 신과 함께 (Together With God, 2017)
“Together With God- Sin and Punishment” is a 2017 South Korean action, fantasy drama film, based on a webtoon, or online comic, written by Joo Ho-Min. It stars Ha Jung-woo, Cha Tae-hyun, Ju Ji-hoon and Kim Hyang-gi. The film was shot as one but will be presented in two parts. The first part, Along with the gods: The Two Worlds. The second one, Along with the God: The Last 49 days. This movie shows a story of the death of an ordinary fireman named Ja-Hong and Gang-rim, the head grim reaper who escorts Ja-hong to the afterlife, where he will assign a public defender to represent him in 7 trials in 49 days to find out how he lived his life and where he ought to spend the rest of eternity. This movie is like a roller coaster with different scenes that can make you laugh and cry repeatedly throughout the movie.
- 택시 운전사 (Taxi Driver, Movie, 2017)
A Taxi Driver is a 2017 south Korean historical action drama film directed by Jang Hoon, with Song Kang-ho starring in the title role. The film was a commercial success and was also the second highest grossing film of 2017. This movie shows a taxi driver from Seoul, accidentally gets involved in a German journalist’s reporting of the events of the Gwangju Democratization movement, also called the Gwangju Uprising in 1980. At first, he only cared about money but as the movie goes on, he also cares about other people and his country. This movie shows 1980 situation well and surprisingly, it is based on the ‘real story’.
