Places to Eat in Wangsimni (part 2)

Alchon (알촌)

This restaurant specializes in dishes that are kind of like the traditional Korean bibimbap, where regular steamed, cooked rice is mixed with different kinds of vegetables and sauces. However, with a more modern twist, Alchon offers simple and cheap options for poor college students like myself.

As you can see from the menu, the prices do not range over 5,000 won, which is amazing for any poor student who lives on a budget. The Basic Menu consists of the “original” rice dish with different levels of spiciness, started with no spiciness, to slightly spicy, spicy, and very spicy. The Special Menu has curry, black bean sauce, and squid (which is spicy). The Cheese Menu has a spicy cheese, and a cheese squid option. The Garlic Menu has the garlic, garlic cheese, and garlic squid options. I had the slightly spicy from Basic Menu and the curry from the Special Menu, with both which I was very happy.

These pictures are an example of their spicy cheese option under the Cheese Menu.

OhBaKke (오바케)

OhBakke is a restaurant that specializes in Japanese “donburi”, which is a Japanese rice bowl dish. Similar to the Korean bibimbap, the Japanese donburi has a similar concept; with a rice base, the toppings vary from fish to meats to vegetables and usually has a soy sauce based sauce to mix in.

The menu doesn’t pass 7,000 Won, and they also have a few other side dishes or extras that are not shown. Going in order from left top to bottom, they have a pork donburi, double pork donburi, shrimp and pork donburi, shrimp and chicken donburi, shrimp and fish donburi, shrimp donburi, beef donburi, sirloin beef donburi.

The next set of items are donkatsu, which are breaded and deep fried cutlets with a side of rice and other side dishes, along with noodles. In order from right top to bottom, A-grade beef donkatsu (that hasn’t been frozen),  fish and shrimp donkatsu, sirloin beef and shrimp and fish donkatsu, cheese and beef and shrimp donkatsu, rice noodles with beef, and lastly, shrimp and beef udon.

They mention that if you pay with cash while ordering a set menu, you can get 1,000 won off! So remember to bring your cash next time you visit OhBaKke! They also have a point system where if you get 10 stamps, you can get a free Pork Donburi for free!

Dos Mas, Mexican Grill (도스마스)

dos mas 1

Now, I cannot say that Dos Mas is authentic “Mexican” food. I would describe it more as a Koreanized Mexican restaurant. A solely burrito specialized restaurant, Dos Mas also allows personalization where you can choose what you want for a reasonable price. Just a buritto is 3,000 won, a buritto and drink is less than 4,000 won, and a “set”, with a buritto, drink, and French fries is under 6,000 korean won.

First you choose your set, whether you want #1 (just a burrito), #2 (burrito + drink), or #3 (burrito + drink + fries). Then you choose which meat you want: beef, chicken, or both. Next, you choose the sauce, which has changed from when I first went and now, so I would check. There are different spicy levels, so be careful to how spicy you choose. Fourth, you choose extra toppings. And lastly, you can choose to either onion rings or French fries.

The sizes are moderately large, but not huge. I usually get the #3 set, and I leave extremely full and content. However, I do have a few male friends who say they could work with more, so keep this in mind when ordering~

dos mas 4

Dos Mas is actually located right across the aforementioned Alchon, so if you know where one is, you can find the other easily. If leaving from Wangsimri Station exit 6, you will walk straight till the main road, and then take a right. Walk till you pass the Baskin Robbins, and until you see Xeno PC Room and KangHoDong’s Chicken Restaurant. Then take a right into the allyway, and you will find Dos Mas on your left, right across from Alchon!  The address for Dos Mas is 153-85 Haengdang-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul.
