A sweet treat on campus, “Hanyang Bakery”

Yeounsu Koh

Hello, Yeounsu here! I’m excited to share a sweet campus treat that everyone at Hanyang should know about. If you’re part of the Hanyang community, you’ve probably already heard of Hanyang Bakery. But if you haven’t, here’s everything you need to know!

Located on the 1st floor of the Hanyang Institude of Technology (HIT) building, Hanyang Bakery opened its doors on March 4, 2024, and has quickly become a popular spot. It offers a variety of freshly baked breads and beverages, all crafted by a Korean master baker with over 40 years of experience. The bakery is open Monday to Friday from 8:00AM to 8:00PM, and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:30PM. It’s closed on Sundays.

Affectionately nicknamed “Handaeppang” – a play on words combining “Hanyang” and “ppang” (bread) – the bakery aims to carry on the university’s founding philosophy of “Love in Deed and Truth” by turning it into “Love in Taste.”

Here are some useful tips if you plan to visit:

  • Peak hours are between 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM, so try to avoid that time if you’re in a hurry.
  • The sandwiches are limited in quantity each day-only 20 egg, 10 bacon, and 10 Jambong sandwiches-so arrive early if you want to grab one.
  • Breads are freshly baked between 6:00 AM and 3:00 PM, so the best to visit is around 10:00AM or 2:00PM.
  • Some of the newest menu items include the Salted Pollack Potato Bread and Chubby Cheeks Bread.

As for my personal favorites? Definitely the Jambong sandwich and the Pollack Roe Bread. They’re both unique and abosulutely delicious.

If you haven’t been yet, give Handaeppang a try-it just might become you new campus favorite!
