The Pop-up Store Phenomenon in South Korea

When hanging out with friends, one might think of multiple activities to do, go eat at a new restaurant, go shopping together, go to cute cafes, or go to the movies – the list is endless. But, one activity that I realize people do in Korea when hanging out with friends is to go to pop-up stores together, especially for the girls.

Pop-up stores are essentially temporary stores that operate for a limited time that brands make when they need to promote a new product or have a flash sale. Cometic brands are usually at the forefront when it comes to pop-up stores but lately, seeing how popular they are, many other companies outside the beauty industry have taken a shot at it themselves.

They are becoming the IT trend of hang-out spots and have been on everyone’s to-go lists. Seongsu-dong especially, is notorious for being the pop-up district in Seoul every week there would be new pop-ups spawning left, right, and center.

What I think makes them so popular is due to how photogenic these pop-up stores are designed. They are extremely interactive and often have experiences to try out for free. Some pop-up stores even give free products and are littered with picture-perfect spots, which is always a plus sign. So if you have a chance to check out a pop-up store near you, give them a visit!
