The League of Legends World Championship

The League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) finals took place on 11/19.

It is the world’s largest esports tournament that identifies the true masters of the game ‘League of Legends.’ This competition is a significant event watched by approximately 400 million people worldwide, and the finals were held in South Korea.

In yesterday’s finals held at Seoul’s Gocheok Dome, South Korea defeated China 3:0 and claimed victory. Faker, a world-renowned star player from South Korea, had experienced defeat in the finals in 2017 but secured the championship this time, celebrating with his teammates. For him, it was a victory after six years.

The captain of the South Korean team, Faker, stated, “I feel great. Above all, I am very grateful that I could play in front of so many people. In such an important esports event, and very appreciative for my teammates” the unity of the teammates is crucial, and it is significant that the role of the captain in leading the team.

The formal name of the tournament is the League of Legends World Championship. Even though it’s often referred to as the Worlds, it’s officially called the World Championship. It holds the largest share in the global esports market. In South Korean PC bang statistics, League of Legends has consistently ranked first every year. Worldwide, nine leagues are conducted, and South Korea is part of the major league. The Worlds began in 2011, bringing together 22 teams from around the world to determine the ultimate champion.

Despite the cold weather, the enthusiasm was high. To support the Worlds finals, 15,000 people gathered at Gwanghwamun Square, holding a cheering event. This was the first time a street cheering event for esports was held at Gwanghwamun Square. Additionally, the live broadcast of the finals at CGV theaters was completely sold out. The global viewership also reached a record high. It was an indication of the significant interest in esports, and it seems that the esports industry has become a major sector. South Korea is expected to further support the development of the esports industry.
