As global warming continues, there have been many natural phenomena in 2020. Many countries have been damaged by massive forest fires, hurricanes, heat waves, and typhoons. In Australia, Siberia, and South America, some regions have been devastated by large forest fires. There were frequent hurricanes in the North Atlantic region. Africa and Southeast Asia were at risk of food shortages as large populations migrated due to severe flooding. Also, Korea suffered heavy flood damage this summer due to the longest rainy season ever.
According to the World Meteorological Organization’s “WMO Global Climate Report (2015-2019),” the average temperature in 2015-2019 rose 1.1 degrees from pre-industrialization. And the global average temperature in 2020 is expected to be 1.2 degrees higher than before industrialization. Sea level is rising as sea level temperature rises. Although the degree of change may not seem large, rising average temperatures and sea levels can lead to extreme weather changes such as typhoons, floods, and heat waves. Even with the blockade caused by COVID-19, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere continued to rise, and the remaining life of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was prolonged, and it is expected that global warming will continue for generations to come.
In Korea, carbon neutrality has recently been emphasized. Carbon neutrality means to re-absorb carbon dioxide emitted socially and make actual emissions zero. Accordingly, the government plans to foster new energy industries such as renewable energy, hydrogen, and energy information technology, and create an integrated fund for the transition to a carbon-neutral ecosystem. Interest in environmental protection in real life is also gradually increasing. Starbucks uses eco-friendly straws, and many people who visit cafes use their own cups. There is also an increasing number of consumers looking for clothing using recycled fibers or actively asking companies to reduce excessive packing. Actually, it might be thought that one of my small actions won’t have a big impact on the environment, but everyone’s actions will come together to slow the deterioration of the environment.
