The 19th Asian Games was held from 23 September to 8 October in Hangzhou, China. Originally slated for 2022, the event was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown in China.
South Korea achieved a 3rd place finish with 42 gold medals, with a total of 190 medals won. China claimed 1st, followed by Japan in 2nd place.
However, the biggest news was South Korea’s victory over Japan in the Asian Games football final, securing gold with a score of 2-1. This win marks the South Korean team’s third consecutive gold medal and holds immense significance as winning gold in the Asian Games grants Korean male athletes exemption from mandatory military service. It was an exciting match, where I watched it along with fellow Koreans at a Korean Pub, also known as Pocha. The close calls and scoring attempts had everyone tense up, standing, and shouting at the top of their lungs. It was an unforgettable experience filled with excitement.

In addition to football, South Korea also emerged triumphant in baseball by defeating Chinese Taipei 2-0 in the finals. This means a record of fourth consecutive gold medals in the competition since 2010.
And that wraps up the highlights from the eventful Asian Games in Hangzhou this year. Until next time, Goodluck with your midterm exam!! See You!!
