Visit Universities in Korea (Part 3)

In the first article, I wrote about the two best of best schools that I think. And in the second article, I introduced schools that are located in the west part of Seoul near Shinchon (신촌). In this area, I am going to introduce universities that are in the eastern part of Seoul that includes also amazing universities also. Different with Shinchon, the size of the University streets is small but there are more than one in Shinchon. Then let’s see what kind of places there are to hang around.

  1. Konkook University (건국대학교)

Konkook is also one of the universities in which many students in Korea want to study. But the school is known for the aesthetic campus more than its academic outcome.

Inside the campus, students from most of the other universities will feel the huge size of the campus. Also, if you walk along the campus many people will be amazed at the flat ground of the campus. The huge pond in the center of the university proves the flatness of the campus. Because of the lake, the campus becomes a romantic place rather than an academic area.

Outside Konkook University there are lots of places to hangout. Maybe this would be the second largest university place following Shinchon. There is a department store and many places to eat. But I want to introduce a new container shopping mall called Common Ground (커먼그라운드). The shopping mall is made of 200 container boxes. Different with the conventional shopping areas this place gives a young and innovative sprite in shopping. I recommend this place for young people that are hanging around Konkook university.

  1. SungKyunKwan University (성균관대학교)

The origin of the name ‘SungKyunKwan’, is an official education institute from the Joseon dynasty (조선왕조). But now the university uses its name as a university. In other words, the university does not officially succeed the Joseon dynasty institution.

Inside the campus, there aren’t many things to look around because of the small size of the campus. Many people say that Sogang University (서강대학교) has a small campus but SungKyunKwan Seoul campus is even smaller than its rivalry university. As the tradition of the school name, we can see some antique buildings that are made of traditional tiled roofs. But not all of the buildings are made in a traditional way like the second picture given.

Outside the campus, there is a street called Daehak-ro (대학로) in Korean this means university street. There was actually a bigger size campus of the SNU but nowadays in Daehak-ro (대학로) there is a small medical campus. But the name university street remains and there are plenty of things to see. Especially, Daehak-ro (대학로) is famous for small theaters. There are many people coming to Daehangno to see the plays in the small theaters. It would be a nice opportunity to watch a show with the most youthful people in Korea.

  1. Korea University (고려대학교)

As I mentioned in the previous articles Korea University is one the top three universities representing the SKY universities. Wikipedia introduces Korea University like this

“ Established in 1905, it is one of the nation’s oldest and most prominent institutions of higher education. Korea University is a large research institution, notable in South Korean history for being the first educational institution to offer academic programs in Korea in various disciplines, such as laweconomics, and journalism.”

As the long history, looking for the antique buildings inside the campus is exciting. There is no need to remember the exact name of each school building. Outside the campus, there is nothing to do. Many people studying at Korea admitted it. Then let’s look at other schools.

  1. KyungHee University (경희대학교)

KyungHee University is also known as a school that has a beautiful campus. But the difference with the Konkook campus is that KyungHee University is far from the subway station. It takes about 30 minutes by foot from the closest subway station. But the buildings in the university are much more beautiful. As we can see in the picture the main hall called Peace Palace (평화의전당) is the most famous place in KyungHee University. This is a big hall used for many purposes like concerts and inner activities.

After looking around the campus why not go to Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS; 한국외국어대학교). The school is right next to KyungHee. Also the size is quite small so you must go to Hankuk University of foreign education right next to KyungHee university.
