Celebrating the lotus flower and the importance of preserving the traditional flora of Korea’s history, this festival will revolve around the beautiful lotus flower. The events will have many different cool programs, like making paper lotus flowers, making lotus flower soap, floating lanterns, fireworks, and many more. There are many cultural and historical sites nearby from the Baekje Dynasty (백제왕조), such as the famous royal mausoleum and the Baekje Buyeo Historical Museum (국립부여박물관).

Traveling here will require a bus from Seoul Nambu Bus Terminal to Buyeo, and is estimated around 2 hours long. Once there, you will need to get to Gungnamji by taxi or bus that is only 1.5km away.

Sadly, their website is only in Korean, but for reference, here is the site! http://www.flowerfestival.co.kr/ (picture source).

Boryeong Mud Festival (July 17 – 26) (보령머드축제)

Address: 1029-3, Sinheuk-dong, Boryeong-si, Chungcheongnam-do (충청남도 보령시 신흑동 1029-3)

The famous mud festival definitely attracts the most foreigners every year. For over a week, the Daecheon Beach (대천해수욕장) area hosts this mud festival every year that has a great atmosphere hosting mud wrestling matches, mud sliding, and swimming in the mega mud tub. There are also mud games, an obstacle marathon, opening and closing ceremonies, a beauty festival, and much more! The boryeong mud has many beneficial properties, and this is a fun and energetic way to enjoy while experiencing the benefits! There are some events and experience zones that will require some fees, but most of the events will be free!

To get to Daecheon Beach, you will take a bus from Central City Bus Terminal (센트럴 시티 터미널) and then arrive at the Boryeong Station (보령역). Then, you must take a bus or taxi to the beach area. The total estimated travel time is at a little over 2 hours travel time.

The festival has a website that is available in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese! http://www.mudfestival.or.kr/ (picture source)

Mokpo Port Festival (July 24 – 28) (목포항구축제)

Address: 88-56, Samhak -ro, Mokpo-si, Jeollanam-do (전라남도 목포시 삼학로 88-56)

Mokpo is an area at the southwestern tip of korea, and is known for their numerous islands. The theme is “Festival of Lights, Ocean of Romance”, and the maritime culture festival will have many events surrounding the rich history of Mokpo. There will be an opening and closing ceremony, fireworks, mud games, concerts, and much more. It is open to all visitors, with some events requiring a fee; for example, riding a yacht is around 5,000 won and the market area has a 2,000 won entrance fee to enjoy all the performances, puppet shows, and auction event.

To travel to Mokpo, you will need to take an express bus from the Dong Seoul Bus Terminal (동서울시외버스터미널) (estimated around 4.5 hours). Once you arrive at the Mokpo Intercity Bus Terminal (목포시외버스터미널) (around 20 minutes), you will need to take a bus stop to the Samhak Street and walk to Samhakro. This is the furthest away from all these festivals, so try to make a weekend trip out of this festival.
